Blog #6- Compare and Contrast

After reading Romeo and Juliet and watching West Side Story (or, you can watch Gnome and Juliet on your own and use that), explain how the two stories are both similar and different, and explain why someone would want to stray from Shakespeare's original play.

You must explain at least three similarites and three differences.

This is due on Friday, 2/8/13.

  1. The book Romeo and Juliet is similar to the movie West Side Story in many ways. There are also many differences. One similarity is that in both stories there are two young lovers. Another similarity is that in both stories the two lovers are parts of two different feuding families. A third and last similarity is that the two lovers end up dying. A difference is that Romeo and Juliet takes place much earlier than West Side Story. Another difference is that the lovers are seperated by race not family. A final difference is that one is a play and the other is a musical.

  3. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story have some similarities and differences.

Some similarities are that the two couples can’t be together because of people around them feuding. Another similarity is that they both meet each other at dances and kiss. One last similarity is they meet later at night.

Some differences are that in Romeo and Juliet the parents are fighting and in West Side Story the Puerto Ricans and the white people are fighting. Another difference is that in West Side Story they don’t make plans to get married the next day like in Romeo and Juliet. One last difference is West Side Story is a musical and Romeo and Juliet is a play.

The last difference is that they are seperated by their race, not there family.

  5. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are similar and different in a plethora of ways.

One way the stories are similar is that both have the protagonists meeting at a ball or dance. Another similarity is that both stories have the protagonists on opposing sides. A third similarity is the male protagonist killing the female protagonist's relative.

One way in which the stories differ is the time period during which they take place. Another difference is the location that each story takes place at. A third difference is the race of the people opposing each other.

  7. “West Side Story” and “Romeo and Juliet” are similar in multiple ways. One way is that there are two lovers that are separated because of a feud. Another reason is that the male lover avenges the death of his friend after a closely related family on the girl’s side of the family kills him. A final way that the stories are similar is that the feuds have resulted in deaths on both sides of the fighting groups.

The two tales are also different in many ways. One way is that in “Romeo and Juliet”, the fighting groups were two different families. In “West Side Story” the two groups are different races. Another difference is that “Romeo and Juliet” is placed in a much earlier time compared to “West Side Story”. The final difference is that “West Side Story” is a musical, while “Romeo and Juliet” is a play.

  8. The book "Romeo and Juliet" and "West Side Story" are similar yet different.

These two are similar in many different ways. One way they are similar is that a guy and a girl fall in love but can’t be together because of feuds. Another similarity is that the families have gotten into many fights with each other and if they fight again they will suffer big consequences. A third similarity is that the male lover kills the female lover’s closely related family member.

There are also many differences between the two stories. One difference is that in “West Side Story” the families fight because of there race but in “Romeo and Juliet” they fight because of pure dislike of the other family. Another difference is that “West Side Story” is a musical and “Romeo and Juliet” is a normal play. A third and final difference is that the punisher in “Romeo and Juliet” is the prince, but in “West Side Story” the punisher is a cop.

  9. The play Romeo and Juliet and the movie West Side story have some similarities and differences. They were both lovers and they went to that one ball dance thing, met at the ball. Romeo which is tony in West Side doesn’t buy a poison to kill himself. In West Side Maria and Tony don’t both die just tony does and Maria doesn’t kill herself. This is the similarities and differences between Romeo and Juliet and West Side. The reason why people would want to stray from Shakespeare’s play is so that it would be their not his.

  10. The play Romeo and Juliet and the movie The West Side story have many differences and similarities. Three similarities are that they both had a young couple. They second similarity is that they fall in love at a ball. The third and last similarity is that the young couples can’t be together. The three differences from the book Romeo and Juliet and the West Side story is that the book is a play and the movie is based on a musical. The second one is the play took place way before then the West Side story did. The third difference and last one is that the writer for the book is a prince and the publisher for the movie is a cop.

  11. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are similar and different. They're similar because Bernardo/Tybalt and Riff/Mercutio are both killed in a fight. Bernardo and Tybalt are also killed to get revenge. Another similarity is that Romeo and Tony both rely on one other person besides their friends, and that is Friar Laurence and Doc.

The stories are different in many ways. In Romeo and Juliet, Balthazar brings the news that Juliet is dead but in West Side Story, it's Anita that says Maria is dead. Also, Romeo commits suicide and Tony is killed by Chino. In Romeo and Juliet, the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt is unplanned where the Jets and Sharks in West Side Story intentionally plan a fight.

  13. Three similarities of both romeo and Juliet and west side story are that Maria and tony have to sneak around to see each other, another one is that Tony killed someone like in the book, a last one is that Tony thinks that Maria died. Three differences with them are that Tony and Maria didn't get married like the book, only Tony died in the story and in the book Romeo and Juliet both died, and a last one is that in Romeo and Juliet there family's hate each other and in West Side Story they are gangs.

  14. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story is similar and different in many ways

Romeo and Juliet is similar to West Side Story because Typalt and Riff both die and they died because of revenge. Another similarity is that there are two young lovers. The last similarity is that in Romeo and Juliet and in West Side Story both Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria both die.

There are many differences in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story. One difference is that in Romeo and Juliet two families hate eachother and in West Side Story two gangs hate eachother. In West Side Story the gangs hate eacother because of race and in Romeo and Juliet the two families hate eachother because of just who they are and they are very competitive. The last difference is that the person who punishes Romeo is a prince and the person that punishes Tony is a cop.
Someone would want to stray from Shakespeares idea because it is romantic and sometimes humorous. If they changed it then it would seem right.

  15. The stories of “Romeo and Juliet” and “West Side Story” have some similarities but also a few differences.

A similarity between the two stories is that both pairs of the lovers shouldn’t be together because of some type of feud. Another similarity is that both male lovers believe that the female they are in love with are dead. A final similarity is that deaths occur on both sides of each story.

One difference in the stories is that in “West Side Story” the opposing groups are separated by race, not family like in “Romeo and Juliet”. Another difference is that “West Side Story” is a musical and “Romeo and Juliet” is a play. A last difference is that only the male protagonist dies in “West Side Story” but both male and female protagonists die in “Romeo and Juliet”.

Someone would want to stray from Shakespeare’s original play to modernize it for the current time period so people would be able to relate to it.

  16. The play "Romeo and Juliet" and the musical "West Side Story" have many similarities and differences

A difference is that the two feuding groups in "West Side Story" are gangs, while the two feuding groups in "Romeo and Juliet" are families. Another difference is that "Romeo and Juliet" is a play, but "West Side Story" is a musical. One last difference is that more people die in "Romeo and Juliet" than in "West Side Story".

One similarity between the play and musical is that a relative that is close to the female protagonist is killed by her lover. Another similarity is that both protagonists meet at a ball or dance. One last similarity is that both protagonists in both "West Side Story" and "Romeo and Juliet" are in love, but from feuding families or groups.

I believe somebody may stray from Shakespeare's original play to modernize it and help people understand it better.

  18. The two stories are very similar. The two lovers met at a dance. In both stories, there are two opposing groups and the two that fall in love are from different groups. They are frobidden to be together Also, the male lover in both stories dies.

The stories are also different in some parts. In 'West Side Story' the opposing groups are gangs and in 'Romeo and Juliet' the opposing sides are families. Romeo and Juliet die in 'Romeo and Juliet', but in 'West Side Story', only Tony died.

I beleive someone would stray from Shakespeare's work to make it more modern so people can understand it easier.

  19. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are ver similiar but different. They are similar beacuse in the end Romeo/Tony die at the end of both stories. They both have people around them trying to forbid there love and finally Romeo and Juliet meet at a dance just like Maria and Tony.

They are different beause in the end of the movie Maria never dies, also Tony didn't kill himself like Romeo did in the play. And finally Romeo and Juliet got married, unlike Maria and Tony who were only planning on running away with each other.

I think that someone would stray away from Shakespeare's original Romeo and Juliet because they need to modernize it because it'll be easier to understand and now people dont speak like that nor do they marry someone and then fake being dead so they don't have to re-marry at 13 years old.

  20. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are similar and different in many ways.
They are similar in ways such as in both someone related to the female was killed by there lover. Also in both the families didn't want them to be together.
There were also many differences. Such as Romeo and Juliet were more of a play and in West Side Story they were all singing. Another difference is in West Side Story they fight because of their race.

  21. Three similarities between the two are the following. One there is two people in love. Two the brother was just like tybalt. Three there was a nurse in Romeo and Juliet and a doctor in the movie. Three difereces are the following. One difference is the names of the two groups. The second difference is that Juliet never ended up killing her self. The third difference is in Romeo and Juliet it was her parents that didnt want them to be Together not her brother. Also someone would change it because to modernise it and make it so guys arnt kissing eachother.

    THIS IS BRYANT'S!!!!!!

  22. “Romeo and Juliet” and “West Side Story” had many similarities and differences. Some similarities are both characters fall in love. Also in both the guy who the girl is in love with kills someone who is very important to them. Another thing is that the lovers were from feuding families. There are many differences between the two also. One difference that in West Side Story the feuding families were separated by race. Also the times that they took places are very different time periods. Another difference is that “Romeo and Juliet” is a play and “West Side Story” is a play. People stray from the Shakespeare version is because it is very hard to understand so they modernize the words.

  23. The play “Romeo and Juliet” and the movie “West Side Story” have many similarities and differences.

Some similarities between them are Tony and Maria met at a dance and Romeo and Juliet met at a ball. Maria and Tony sneak around to see each other like Romeo and Juliet. Another similarity is people are split up between the Jets and the Sharks like in Romeo and Juliet there are the Montague’s and Capulet’s.

Some differences are, at the end of “West Side Story” Tony get shot and dies and Maria does not die unlike Romeo and Juliet were they both die. “Romeo and Juliet” was a play and “West Side Story” was a musical. One other difference is “Romeo and Juliet was in an earlier time than “West Side Story”.

  24. The two stories are the same because in Romeo and Juliet they are in love and in the West side story the two main characters are in love. They are different because in the West side story they are always singing and dancing and I the book Romeo and Juliet it is all boring too. They would stray from Shakespeare’s play to make it more interesting and kind of ruin it. Some other differences are the names of the people are different and the setting the way the both of the stories are set up.

  26. “West Side Story” and “Romeo and Juliet” share common themes, while both exhibiting their own ideas.

To start, both have a pair of loving teens who are part of opposing families. Also, the male protagonist kills the female protagonists’ family member. Finally, by the end of both stories, the lovers are separated by death.

The two stories also have different concepts than the other. In “West Side Story,” the setting is more modern, in a city, most likely in the 1990’s. “Romeo and Juliet” took place when Shakespeare was alive, in the 1590’s. Also, in the original “Romeo and Juliet,” Juliet was played by a prepubescent male, however, in “West Side Story,” the part was played by a female. To finalize, in the original play, Romeo was banished for killing a man named Tybalt, though in the modern musical, the role of Romeo (Tony) was never banished from the premises for killing another man (Bernardo).

One reason one would want to reconstruct Shakespeare’s original play is because the tale is compelling, romantic, at times humorous, and overall endearing. Even in today’s audience, people like these characteristics. Also, movie producers thought these stories would help them be successful. Though, producers believe they have a few better ideas, so they include them as well.

There are a lot of similarities. The main similarity is that there are two lovers from to groups that hate each other. In both stories Romeo dies. The third similarity is people from both sides get killed.
There were also many differences. In “West Side Story” The girl that’s “Juliet” does not die but in “Romeo and Juliet” she does. In “Romeo and Juliet” Juliet’s cousin died, but in “West Side Story”, Maria’s (aka Juliet) brother died. In “Romeo and Juliet” Romeo killed himself, But in “West Side Story” Tony got killed.
Somebody would want to stray from Shakespeare’s original play so that people can actually understand what it is saying.

  28. The movie “West Side Story” is based off the old tale “Romeo and Juliet”, and such it has many similarities. Although compared to what it was based off of “West Side Story” still has many differences.
One difference is the end of the lovers. In “Romeo and Juliet”, both of the lovers died but in “West Side Story” only Tony (Romeo) is the one who had perished. Another difference is the setting. “Romeo and Juliet” took place in 14th century Italy while
“West Side Story” took place in 20th century New York. The last difference is the relationship between the sides. Both sides do constantly fight and hate each other, which is a similarity, but in “West Side Story” the feud is between two rival gangs who break out into musical numbers and dance frantically.
Someone might want to change the Romeo and Juliet story because it is a tad bit complicated. People these days are more interested in romance with comedy mixed into it.

Both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story have family of friend die. The stories also have differences, in Romeo and Juliet they are just parts of different families, in West Side Story they are part of different gangs. In Romeo and Juliet Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead and then he drank poison. Juliet woke up and he was dead and then she killed herself. In West Side Story Tony killed himself and Maria did not kill herself.

  38. West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet have many similarities and differences.

Three similarities between the two are young people fall in love, they also fall in love at a ball/dance. In both stories the people who are in love are from completely different familys that dont get along. Also in both stories people die.

Three differences between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are when the stories were developed or written in different time periods. Also in Romeo abd Juliet there were arranged marriages but not in WSS. Both stories were written in different settings.

  39. There are several different similarities and differences in the two stories. In West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet, there are two groups that can't stand each other. Except in West Side Story the two groups are the Jets and Sharks and in Romeo and Juliet it's the Capulet's and Montague's.

In West Side Story there are two lovers that both are in opposite groups, just like in Romeo and Juliet. Unlike in Romeo and Juliet, the two lovers are named Tony and Maria.

One final similarity and difference is that the two lovers do meet at a dance/ball in both stories. Though the settings are completely different. West Side Story takes place in New York City. Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona Apon Avon.

  41. There are some similarities of "West Side Story" and "Romeo and Juliet". One is that they both can't be together. Also that they both meet at the dance. The last is that they both fall in love really fast.

There are also some differences between "West Side Story" and "Romeo and Juliet". One is that in "Romeo and Juliet" they both die and in "West Side Story" only the guy dies. Another is that in "Romeo and Juliet" the two people can't be together because of their families and in "West Side Story" the two people can't be together because of the two gangs (sharks and jets). The last is that "West Side Story" had singing and dancing and in "Romeo and Juliet" they didn't.

  42. After reading Romeo and Juliet and watching West Side Story (or, you can watch Gnomeo and Juliet on your own and use that), explain how the two stories are both similar and different, and explain why someone would want to stray from Shakespeare's original play.

You must explain at least three similarities and three differences.

After reading Romeo and Juliet and watching Gnomeo and Juliet there are many similarities and differences in the play and the movie.

In Romeo and Juliet, both Romeo and Juliet were young. They were so foolish. Romeo was talking about how he loved Rosaline just a few hours he met Juliet. Romeo and Juliet both killed themselves. Romeo got banished from Verona. Romeo met Juliet at a dance. They only knew each other for a couple days. Romeo and Juliet got married then, Juliet was set up to be married to Paris.

In the movie Gnomeo and Juliet, they meet one night when they both go to grab a flower and they both grabbed the flower at the same time. They fell in love when they first saw each other. Everyday they would meet each other in a yard close by both of their homes. Gnomeo and Juliet were both gnomes, not humans. Gnomeo only had a mother and Juliet only had a father. The director of Gnomeo and Juliet used personification because all of the gnomes and plastic animals could talk.

There are a lot of similarities between the two. Both of the families are fighting. The both of lovers are crazy about eachother and would anything to be with another. Both of the parents don't want them to be together. They both wanted to run away together.
